The background of the stamp depicting Welsh Cattle is Snowdonia and illustrates the hardiness of the breed.  The Welsh Cattle can be traced back to pre-Roman Britain, originally there were two breeds, the small North Wales breed and the Castlemartin breed in South Wales.  The Welsh Society formed in 1873 and in 1904 decided to interbreed the two breeds producing todays’ cattle.  They are very hardy and popular for beef but they also make good mothers, they are found all over the world in countries with extremes of climate.
